FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I donate?

We accept all cars, trucks, vans, commercial vehicles, SUVS, 4X4, boats, trailers, jet skis, motorcycles, RVs and mobile homes.

My car has mechanical problems and hasn’t run in years! Can I still donate it?

Yes! We accept most vehicles running or not, even if there are mechanical problems. You can donate any year, make or model. Give us a call or fill out the online form to make sure we accept your car.

There is body damage or rust on my car - can I still donate it?

Yes! Just give us a call and we’ll arrange a convenient pick-up time.

No title? No keys?

No problem! We will accept your vehicle without the title and/or keys.

What do I need to donate my vehicle?

We would like to have the title and keys to the vehicle, but if you do not have them, don’t worry. The only thing you need is an appointment. Just give us a call.

How long will it take to pick up my car?

We’ll usually arrange for a towing company to contact you by phone within 24 hours. If you need the car picked up sooner, we will try our best to accommodate you – just give us a call.

Do I have to be home for the pick up of my car?

Nope! Just inform us that you will not be home and leave the title and keys under the seat. We can take care of the paperwork over the phone.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes! Hewlett House is an IRS recognized 501 (C) (3) non-profit and can issue tax deductible receipts. However, individual tax situations vary. Please consult with a tax professional to determine the benefits you may receive.

How does my tax deduction work?

The IRS allows the taxpayer to claim a tax deduction up to five hundred dollars ($500.00). If the vehicle is sold for more than five hundred dollars, you will be notified by mail with a revised tax deductible receipt.

What happens if there is an issue with my car after it’s been donated?

You are responsible for your vehicle until it is picked up. Once we pick up your vehicle, we take full responsibility for it.

ABOUT US

Hewlett House is a community learning resource center for cancer patients and their families. Our staff has been serving the cancer community for over 28 years and has served tens of thousands of cancer patients and their families.

Hewlett House is all about human connection.   Since our opening in 2000, we’ve become a safe haven for cancer patients and their families. The patients come together to network and receive accurate information in a comfortable, safe environment. We facilitate discussions that help patients come to terms with their cancer and treatments, while maintaining strict HIPAA standards of privacy.

All our services are provided without the support of government or other nonprofit foundations, which means we rely on the generosity of our supporters and vehicle donation program.

Hewlett House is operated by 1 in 9, a nonprofit that’s been fighting cancer since 1990.

In the late 1980s, the U.S. Department of Health found that women on Long Island had a significantly higher risk of contracting breast cancer and that one in nine women would contract some form of cancer.

1 in 9 was founded on November 27th, 1990 by women who wanted a new, in-depth environmental study which became the Long Island Breast Cancer Project. They’ve been raising awareness and organizing their communities in the fight against cancer ever since.

1 in 9 turned the results from that study into legislation that supports cancer patients and protects Long Island residents from harmful chemicals.
